DNA fingerprinting (also called DNA profiling) is a technology that can identify and distinguish among individuals based on variations in their DNA. Like the human fingerprint, the DNA of each individual is different and can be used for identification. When subjected to DNA fingerprinting, selected fragments of chromosomal DNA produce a series of bands on a gel. The unique pattern of these bands is usually a distinguishing feature of each individual. For DNA fingerprinting, PCR is used to generate copies of specific regions of DNA, which are then analyzed for length variations. These variations may be used to identify deceased individuals or suspects in a crime. In this example, the evidence suggests that suspect A is not the criminal.
