Picture of Flying Electric Generator

Fig(a)
What is Flying electric generator:

 It is a wind mill similar to conventional one in its working

principle but here the rotor and generator will be floating in air
just like a hot air balloon.

 The generator will be enclosed in an inflatable structure and this

structure held by tether and tied to the ground.

 The electrical energy generated which transfer to the ground

through the tether to the power grid.
Introduction
 Two major jet steam the sub-tropical jet and the polar front
jet exist in both hemisphere. These enormous energy steam
are formed by the combination of tropical region.
This wind resource is invariably available whenever the sun
shine and the earth rotate .

 These jet steam winds offer an energy benefit between one

and the two order of magnitude greater than equal rotor –
area , ground mounted turbine operated in the lower region
of the earth boundary layer.
 In USA O’Dohery and Roberts have show that average
power density of around 17kw/m2 are available.

 FEG are proposed to harness kinetic energy in power full

persistent high altitude wind. At 1500ft or 4600m and
above, tether rotor craft could give individual out-put of
up to 40MW.

 FEG is lighter wind turbine that rotate about a

Horizontal axis in response to wind and generating
electrical energy. The electrical energy is transfer down
to a set of battery or to the power grid.
Need of flying electric technology:

 FEG Generate the Electricity at low cost.

 It is very environmentally friendly and It can be placed closed

to the demand center due to which Transmission line cost and
Transmission loses are reduced.

 In this we use air turbine which is highly mobile, and can be

easily moved. This is especially good for emergency disaster
relief situation.
Wind speed increase with height

 Near the earth’s surface the

motion is opposed and speed
reduced by the surface friction.
At the surface wind speed
reduced and then began to
increase with height and at some
height known as gradient height.
The motion may be consider as
free of earth’s friction.
Components of FEG:
Working of Flying Electric Generator

 The Turbine filled with helium is deployed with the help of tether
made from a high-performance multifilament yarn spun from
liquid crystal polymer, which stronger than steel with high
strength to weight ratio.

 The FEG is an innovative lighter than air tethered device that rotate
about a Horizontal axis in response to wind.
 As the rotor of the FEG rotate due to high velocity wind, It
produces very high torque.

 There is a set-up gear box which connect to the low-speed

shaft to the high-speed shaft and increase the rotational
speed from about 30-60(rpm) to about 1200-1500(rpm).

 The electrical energy thus produced is transferred down

the tether for consumption ,or to set of batteries.
Power station set-up
Lift Mechanism
 FEG is filled with helium gas, which is an inert and non-flammable.
The lifting gas creates a lift force that is in excess of the total weight
of the system. The helium provide the at least twice the position
lift versus the over-all weight of the unit.

 The aerodynamic phenomenon provide additional lift, keep the

FEG device stabilize, position FEG with in a very control and
restricted location.

 Additional unit is also create when the rotor is spinning in a

wind due to Magnus effect .
Construction data

 The FEG is constructed with composite fabric used in airship.

The fabric will be Dacron with an exterior coating of Mylar
which will provide ultra-violet protection. Turbine connect to
motor-generator which produce thrust during take off and
generate power during cross wind flight.

 The first kind form of high altitude wind power is to

construct transmission equipment at high altitude.
Application of FEG
Advantages
 High altitude from ground level are possible with out
expensive tower.

 They do not required land, wide road and machinery

for assembly.

 Ability to install closer to the power grid.

 Low cost electricity.

 Environmental friendly.
Disadvantages

 Restricted air-space for airplane to fly.

 Not suitable for highly populated areas.

 There is adequate safety measure provided.

Limitation of FEG

 Initial cost is high.

 It can not be installed with in five miles of the boundary of any

airport.

 Helium gas is leaks at a rate of 0.5 percent per month so

the balloon is refilled with helium gas after six month.
Conclusion

 We know that wind energy is clean energy i.e. pollution free and eco-
friendly and also wind energy is a renewable energy. Our FEG is a
new mobile power generation system uses the wind energy in the
effective manner so as to generate more power. This system is better
and more effective power generation system.

 High-altitude wind power using tethered wind turbine device has

the potential to open up a new wind resource in an areas that are
not served by conventional turbine.
